One of the first things visitors notice when entering your home is its smell. Good or bad, unless your guests have a poorly functioning olfactory sense, they are going to notice the way your house smells. Our homes are incubators for all kinds of smells. Kitchens, basements, pet boxes and closets generate some doozies!

Every house or home has its own special aroma. The problem is that you and your family can’t usually smell it because you’re so used to it. If you go away on vacation for a week or two, then you can detect the house smell, usually as soon as you walk in the door.

TIP: For general strong odors in the home try taking a pot of water, add some vanilla and let it simmer on the stove. You can also add cinnamon sticks, cloves, or orange peels to the pot to form your own popouri.

Febreze is a brand of household odor eliminator manufactured by Procter & Gamble, sold in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The product, when used as directed by the manufacturer, is safe to use in households with dogs and cats and probably safe to use in households with ferrets, rabbits and rodents. Rumors have circulated stating that the product causes serious harm to household animals; however, studies have not shown that the product is harmful under normal usage. According to the pet safety FAQ page posted by Procter & Gamble in response to these rumors, research confirms that the product, used according to directions, poses no serious health threat to pets. As with any cleaning product, it is recommended that birds be removed from the room until the product application has dried and the area has been ventilated.
