  • Making Homemade Potpourri From Readily Available Ingredients

Tips on making fragrant homemade potpourri scents using ingredients in and around the home.

Traditional potpourri is created from a mixture of dried flowers, stems, bark, oils, and other ingredients, placed in open containers, bowls or cups to allow the aroma to scent a room.

Small sachets of potpourri can be used in clothing drawers, in closets, or simply placed on tables and bathroom counter tops allowing the fragrant scents to waft through the room(s).

Generally the potpourri ingredients should be lightly crushed, and ingredients like cinnamon sticks, bark, or lemon peel should be broken into small pieces or finely chopped. An old coffee grinder can also be utilized for shredding some of the materials, making sure all materials are completely dry before creating the potpourri mix. One of the best ways to dry the flowers and other material is to use a dehydrator as it not only speeds up the drying process, but the fragrance of the flowers and plant material is also retained.
